Dengie Social new community website

Hi all and welcome to our new Dengie website. Please join up and join your local community

Hello and welcome to Dengie Social. A brand new website for the dengie community.

The Dengie peninsular is the name given to an area of marshland on the coast of Essex, north of the mouth of the Thames. The majority of the Dengie is agricultural marshland, much of it below sea level. There are few trees and much of it consists of windswept fields and riverbank bordered by hedges. The coast of the Dengie is a birdwatcher’s paradise, the coastal marshes and estuaries are home to many types of birds including wildfowl, gulls, game birds, waders, owls and birds of prey.
The Dengie Hundred (as the area is known locally) has been populated for thousands of years and seen its fair share of history; the roman’s built a sea fort out on St Peter’s Flat to defend the coast against Saxon and Frankish raiders. On the same site St Peter’s Chapel was founded by St Cedd in 654 AD, this chapel survives today and is the one of the oldest churches in Britain.
In 991 AD a Viking army defeated a superior Anglo-Saxon force on the shores of the Blackwater at Northey Island in what became known as the Battle of Maldon. Organised smuggling gangs have operated in the area since before Tudor times some of them have used violent and brutal methods to protect their activities. During World War Two, Bradwell Bay Airfield served as the home for Canadian and British squadrons of Hurricanes, Mosquitoes and twin engine Boston bombers. The airfield was later used for the development of one of Britain’s first nuclear power stations.

Okay history lesson over. This website has been created to inform, entertain and help build up a community of friends and neighbours all connected by the fact that you live in this area and share similar interests. We have a forum to chat about local issues and interests, a business finder for when your in need and much much more. Please join up and contribute to the site and we can make this a great place to hang out.
